Congrats on the decision to start a renovation or new construction project! It’s a great idea to hire an interior designer to help you through this long and sometimes overwhelming process! Now you may be asking, at what point is the best time to bring a designer in? Pretty much any time is a good time to consider hiring a Designer. Of course the sooner the better however different times in the process can provide their own pros and cons.
At what point are you considering hiring an interior designer?
Architectural Drafting Phase
This is the preferred time for myself (and most designers) to get involved
We are able to create a consistent theme and style for the home from the beginning
Can create details throughout that may require specific changes to the floor plan
We are able to iron out any issues that the architect might have missed (window placement, room flows, style inconsistencies on exterior)
Helps to build trust with the client, seeing us in our element while learning more about the client’s likes and dislikes
We have a chance to look at the budget prior to construction and let you know if we see anything that stands out
Best to start from the beginning to see the project’s vision through until the end
Architectural Plans have been “Finalized”
This is another good time for us to come in because we may still have a chance to review certain issues (window placement, room flows, style inconsistencies on exterior)
We still have a chance to look at the budget prior to construction and let you know if we see anything that stands out
Great time to start working on cabinetry details and custom millwork before any construction has begun
House has begun construction
We might still be able to make minor floor plan changes, but will likely incur a change order fee
We still have time to work on creating custom cabinetry and millwork details (with less flexibility)
Can consult on the budget but there is less flexibility
Great time to work on selecting finishes (interior and exterior)
House is on track to finish
At this point, it’s a little late for a lot of the previous things mentioned above but many can still be reviewed with a possibility of change
As long as there are still 3-4 months left on the project, that should give us enough time to select a complete furniture package for your home
Construction and renovations can be extremely overwhelming with all the selections that need to be made and coordinated. The sooner we can get involved, the bigger the impact we can make on your home and the more stress we can take off your plate.
